A flatbed carries the vehicle; a wheel-lift tows it on its own wheels
A flatbed — also called a rollback — is a truck with a deck that tilts to the ground so a vehicle can be winched up and carried entirely off the pavement. Nothing on the vehicle rotates or bears load in transit, which is why it is the default for anything damaged, low, valuable, or mechanically uncertain.
A wheel-lift is a different tool for a different situation. It slides a yoke under one axle, lifts that end clear of the road, and the vehicle rolls on its remaining two wheels behind the truck. It is a shorter, more manoeuvrable rig, which is why operators generally reach for it when a vehicle has to come out of a parking structure or a space a rollback cannot get square to.
Both are current, accepted equipment. Flatbed towing and wheel lift towing exist side by side on the same fleet because the work varies from call to call.
Many all-wheel-drive vehicles must travel with all four wheels off the ground
Mazda's owner's manual puts it without qualification: "always tow an AWD vehicle with all four wheels off the ground". The reason is mechanical. On an all-wheel-drive vehicle every wheel connects to the drivetrain, so two wheels turning on the road drive the driveline while the engine is off and nothing is circulating lubricant through it.
The same manual spells out both failure modes. Towing an all-wheel-drive vehicle with either the front or rear wheels on the ground risks damaging the drive train, or lets the vehicle trail away from the tow truck. Towing it pointed backward with the driving wheels down "may cause internal damage to the transmission."
Requirements do vary between manufacturers, though, and not always in the direction you would guess. Ford's owner-manual guidance permits flat towing on all four wheels only as an emergency measure, under strict speed and distance limits, and states that a vehicle cannot be recreationally towed that way because vehicle or transmission damage may occur. Two makes, two different rulebooks. The glovebox settles it faster than any general article can, including this one.
Electric vehicles reach the same requirement by a different mechanism
An EV's problem is not a centre differential — it is that a turning wheel makes the motor into a generator.
What Tesla's manual states
Tesla's owner's manual heads the relevant section "DO NOT TRANSPORT WITH WHEELS ON THE GROUND" and explains that "the motors in Model Y generate power when the wheels spin. Always transport Model Y with all four tires off the ground." The warning goes past ordinary wear: transporting the vehicle with tires able to spin "can lead to significant damage and overheating," and Tesla adds that in rare cases extreme overheating may cause surrounding components to ignite.
Tesla names a flatbed as the recommended method and notes that damage caused by improper transport is not covered by the warranty. For anyone weighing whether the equipment choice really matters, that last clause is the practical answer.
Wheel dollies let a wheel-lift meet the same requirement
Dollies are small wheeled platforms that the grounded tires sit on, raising them clear of the road — so a wheel-lift fitted with dollies puts all four wheels off the pavement exactly as a flatbed does.
Both manufacturers treat this as a legitimate method. Mazda's own illustration of a vehicle with all front and rear wheels raised labels wheel dollies as the means of doing it. Tesla is more explicit still: if a flatbed is unavailable, "wheel lifts and dollies must be used to ensure that all four wheels are off of the ground," capped at 35 miles and the dollies' rated speed.
A wheel-lift is therefore not the wrong truck for an all-wheel-drive car. It is the truck that needs dollies — which is a dispatch question, best settled when you call rather than when the driver arrives.
Sling equipment is what manufacturers actually prohibit
Sling-type towing — the older hook-and-chain rig that cradles the bumper and suspension — is the method manufacturers rule out. Mazda's instruction is direct: "Do not tow with sling-type equipment. This could damage your vehicle. Use wheel-lift or flatbed equipment."
Notice what that sentence does. It groups wheel-lift and flatbed together as the acceptable pair and excludes the sling. If you have read somewhere that wheel-lifts damage cars, the claim has most likely been carried over from sling equipment that stopped being standard decades ago.
Tie-down practice deserves the same attention as the lift. Tesla specifies securing a vehicle over the tires using an eight-point method, and warns against running straps through the wheels, over body panels, or onto the chassis and suspension.
The two methods compared on four dimensions
Wheels off the ground — flatbed: all four — wheel-lift: one axle, or all four with dollies fitted
Damaged or non-rolling vehicles — flatbed: handles seized wheels, collision damage, a parking brake that will not release — wheel-lift: needs the grounded wheels to roll, or dollies
Access and footprint — flatbed: longer truck, needs room to tilt and winch — wheel-lift: shorter, works in confined space
Manufacturer-sanctioned wheels-down movement — flatbed: not applicable, nothing touches the road — wheel-lift: only within stated limits, and Ford caps flat towing at 20 mph and four miles
That last row is the one drivers misjudge. Ford's guidance requires the transmission in neutral, caps speed at 20 mph and distance at four miles, and confines the purpose — on public roads, flat tow "only to get out of the way of danger or to provide access for a flatbed trailer to load the vehicle."
Read that as two separate operations rather than one. Getting a car off a live lane on I-270 is the first job; transporting it is the second. Tesla draws the same boundary from the other end, allowing its Tow Mode to roll the wheels slowly for less than thirty feet to clear a parking space.
Flatbed vs wheel-lift towing: how to tell which your vehicle needs
Start with the drivetrain and the damage. All-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or electric points to all four wheels up, by deck or by dollies. Collision damage, a seized wheel, a parking brake that will not release, or a lowered or modified vehicle points specifically to a flatbed.
A front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive car with a mechanical fault and no body damage is straightforward wheel-lift work. Vehicle type decides the rest: motorcycle towing uses flatbed transport and soft tie-down straps rather than a wheel-lift, and semi-trucks, buses and RVs are heavy duty towing on different equipment again.
Geography matters too. Madison County runs from the I-270 corridor through Granite City, Collinsville and Edwardsville out to I-55 at Troy and I-64 near O'Fallon, and Alton sits directly across the Mississippi from Missouri — so a fair share of calls end at a body shop or dealership in the St. Louis metro rather than a few miles away. A longer haul is deck work.
Tell the dispatcher the year, make, model and drivetrain when you call. That is what decides which truck leaves the yard, and getting it right the first time saves a second trip.
